History of Chemistry, Atomic Theory & Structure

Follow the links below for our “reading” for this week. Make sure to follow these links in order as there are some web “applets” that I would like you to use to test your knowledge in these areas before moving on to the next topic! This week all the "problems" you will be solving are incorporated into the websites and applets themselves, so there are no additional answers that will be posted.

Chemistry - Central Science Live - To use this website, click on the “eChapter” link on the left, then in the upper left corner there is a pull-down menu that will say “Select Location.” Go through sections 2.1 and 2.2 at this time.

Cathode Ray Tube Applet - This applet explains how a cathode ray tube works as well as calculations that helped to define the electron in the atom.

Millikan Oil Drop Applet - This applet walks you through the Millikan Oil Drop experiment and how it was useful in finding the charge of an electron.

Rutherford Experiment Applet - This applet shows the Rutherford experiment that changed the view of the atomic model from the “Plum Pudding” version to a description that contained a nucleus in the atom.

Chemistry - Central Science Live - To use this website, click on the “eChapter” link on the left, then in the upper left corner there is a pull-down menu that will say “Select Location.” Go through sections 2.3 and 2.4 at this time.

This wraps up the first part of chapter two in AP Chemistry!
